In f2p games, whales are the people that spend large amounts of money on the game.  A whale woman is a woman that spends a lot of money on a game.  Some do this for one game and make regular purchases, others spend money across several games.

Anecdotes from me indicate that most women playing F2Ps are free only players because their significant others play and they want to share their hobby or whatever.  There are those glorious ones that pick up a game and go bananas just because they wanted to, but they're far more rare.  I was just wanting to know if the actual stats matched my experiences.

Man, I don't even know where to begin on this one.  First, let me burst your assertion with this question: What if the woman's significant other is also a woman?

I play games within and without the guild alongside female players who are every bit as passionate and obnoxious as male players can be. :)  But as we continue to carve out the general and overriding notion that women are equal to men, why would gaming be any less different than other topics?  The "rare" ones you mentioned are not as rare as you might think, in spite of your personal experiences.  I think you have to broaden your horizons to include all gaming genres, not just the ones you're interested in. ;)

-- Kyuu

If their SO is another woman, good for them?  I really don't care.  I can only speak to what I've seen, so that's why I'm curious about the statistics. If a whale woman (I'm talking gaming here!) is in a relationship with a free only player, that's great.  I have yet to meet one of those couples and know about it.

So yeah.  I'm pretty sure you all know about my stance on women and gaming.  (If not, it's "the more, the merrier")

Starfire, why does that matter?

It doesn't.  I'm just curious.

I'd like to see a breakdown of how many women vs men are free play whales, casual purchases, or free only players.

I am a whale, for World of Tanks at least!

Don't worry, I'll write a program for you.  It will spawn a billion child processes.  Each will show up in the systray (technically Notification Area, tablet ALL the things)

And they will all have round icons varying slightly in shade.

Mature content warning?  Two women in lingerie having a pillow fight during some clips.

Edit: Ok, the reason behind this one?  I got an offer on a sr. sys admin position at one of the biggest companies in the world.  I won't say which one (a couple of you know) but let's say top 10 on Fortune's list.  Stress is gone.  Now I have to do all this crap I keep saying I can do. :)  (I get to do all the crap I keep saying I can do!!!)

There's a pretty decent chance that my original Starfire character from STO exists solely because of Washu.

http://www.playbuzz.com/gregs/can-we-guess-who-you-are-in-only-20-questions

Take it and post your results below!  If you feel extra-froggy, you can even make corrections much as I had to!

Male, Mid 50’s Early 30's
Here is our best guess at who you are:
1. You are male.
2. You are currently in your mid fifties early thirties, still working hard and enjoying every minute of it.
3. You are starting to go bald gray, but you don't care about it as much as you thought you would when you were younger. You still have your goodish looks, your gray hazel eyes and your sense of humor.
4. You have a beautiful loving family parents, great life-long friends and guildmates, even the doctor is happy with your annual check up!
5. Things are generally good, and you just wish they'll stay that way for much, much longer.

3D Touhou beats anything that could possibly come out of E3 this year.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ssh71hePR8Q

The music from the 3D Touhou video reminded me of this gem from the past.

Interesting fact:  Came here to post the video because I've had it stuck in my head all day.  I had no idea that was her theme from Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.

Love me some Pentatonix!
The cello thing is part of the percussionists's solo gig.  The rest of the group found him on youtube doing beatbox while playing the cello.  It's INCREDIBLE!  As far as I know, the only violin they've used was in a collaboration with Lindsey Stirling, an extremely talented violinist.

And what the hell, how about some violin dubstep, because reasons.

We have a cat.  There is no twine left in this house.
I have young nieces.  There's also no playdoh.

I also question the structural integrity of playdoh swivels.  Maybe with an intricate pulley system the twine could handle the joints, but pulleys aren't in the spec, and if I'm going to get empty thread spools...

I have put way too much thought into this!  Begone!  :)

At some point, I'll post a picture of the completed recording rig.

General Discussion / Starfire's audio quality is about to get a boost!
« on: April 03, 2014, 04:31:12 am »
So, as I'm sure any of you who've listened to the Watchcast know, I've had major issues where my microphone drops some of my audio at random.  The only explanation I have for it is a crappy microphone on my headset.

Now, I'm more than willing to spend money when it's necessary and not too much.  My eventual goal is to get a studio-quality condenser mic, but I don't have the money for that right now, and I certainly don't have the money for a proper arm and shock mount for it!  It turns out that the USB microphone from Rock Band works great on PCs.  It's actually a pretty solid condenser mic.  It's not quite studio quality, but for what I do, it's good enough for now!

So problem solved, right?  Not exactly...

I have to hold the microphone in my hand.

To give you an example of how much that hurt, Flessas and I spent about 2 hours on Tuesday recording.  I had to hold the microphone for 2 hours.  My arm cramped so bad from that.

So Starfire needs a mic stand.  $100 from Amazon for a nice adjustable arm stand, $20 or so for a "universal" shock mount (keeps the microphone from picking up vibrations on the desk it's mounted to), and $10 for a pop filter.  No, I don't think I'm going to throw down the cost of 2 AAA titles for that, thank you very much!

Walmart has an adjustable desk lamp on clearance for $6.  I ordered it tonight for store pickup.  There's a hardware store right next to Walmart around here.  I'm going to get a 2" PVC coupler, remove the lamp portion from the arm, cut notches in the coupler for rubber bands, and DIY my own arm and shock mount.  I could DIY the pop filter too, but $10 is cheap enough I can justify buying one instead of making one for nearly the same price.

Total price for my audio upgrade will be around $20.  I really can't wait to get started!

It was actually Sarah Brightman's breakout hit.  She then went on to have an incredible career singing in musicals.  She has an incredible voice.  She did a version of Phantom Of The Opera with Antonio Banderas for some Andrew Lloyd Webber honor ceremony that was absolutely incredible.

Edit: Hit submit way too early heh

Tonight's obsession:

I've been listening to this over and over for the past hour or so.  Loreena McKennitt has some great vocals, but this instrumental track from her album An Ancient Muse has been a favorite of mine since I first heard it years ago.

And, because I can't leave you guys with just ONE song to listen to...

I don't know why they did a US version of this video.  I don't know why I was watching the US version of the video.

The things you listen to the night before the podcast needs to be posted and you haven't recorded a single line yet...

Wow.  I was honestly prepared for this to be something I didn't want to read.  I'm not a fan of most stories around this theme.  This story surprised me, though.  I'm not sure if it was because Colleen seems to be a nice little computer geek or what, but I was genuinely interested in what happened to her.  I'm glad she got some closure on this.

Ok, now post more!  I want to read. :D

It's so awesome we have so many watchers that are also talented writers.  Of course, this delays me on reading The Wheel Of Time, but it's worth it!

I'm listening to the reassuring hum of my desktop PC and clack-clack of my keyboard for the first time in two weeks!

It's been one hell of an ordeal.  I'm sure I'll summarize just WTF happened to Starfire on an upcoming Watchcast episode, which should be resuming soon as long as my microphones survived!
