Question: Forum Registration Spam?
« on: January 01, 2013, 05:04:53 pm »
May I ask what you guys use to discourage or prevent being spam bombed by phoney registrants to your forums?

Lasarian, you do not register to the forum directly - you apply to the site which then generates a forum "identity".  Any applicant to the site (to the Watch) must be approved, so the instances of phonies is somewhat limited accordingly.
*If you're not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.*

Aye RBW Integrates the website functions across the entire spectrum of the site. So one approval = 1 account to everything in the watch.  This has reduced the spam greatly and keeps our sites clean. Thanks for noticing Kianne's hard work in the background :)

As others have said, forum registration is disabled outright so that prevents that avenue for spam. We do allow guests to post, but we require them to type "RBW" somewhere in their post. This blocks automated spam yet to me is more friendly than a CAPTCHA. Registration on the main website is protected via a security key (essentially a password) which the guildmate sponsor gives to the potential new member in order for him to register. This prevents automated spam registrations on the website, and also kind of ensures that new members are recruited by somebody rather than just jumping in as total strangers.

This is exactly what I was contemplating doing for the NOR forums - nice to see such a seamless implementation here.  Very encouraging!  Thanks for the guidance.
