Ask Kayhynn over on EOGamer.com
« on: December 01, 2010, 08:24:49 pm »
Okay as most of you know, I write stuff when I have time over at EOGamer.com

I've decided, after years of thinking of doing it at other sites to finally do an Ask Kay article once a week.

I'll answer 5 gaming related questions each week, prolly on Fridays. This is your opportunity to ask questions that may appear on the site and be answered. So ask your questions in reply to this thread. I'll post a link each week to the article here as well. Questions can be about my gaming history, my take on games, WoW related questions, trivia.... whatever. If I don't have an answer to it, I'll try to find one smile.gif

And, once again, I'll encourage folks who are interested to post over on our forums as well, which are deader than a doornail.

Soooo on your mark...get set....ask.

Nice article. I have a question in mind, though I'm not sure if it's right for the article. I'll go ahead and ask it and see what you think.

I'm looking at building a new gaming rig, but it's been a few years since I built my last machine, and I need to update my hardware knowledge. I'm looking online and seeing things like 6 core processors, ITX and DTX form factors, which are all new to me. Is there a website that reviews PC hardware specifically with gaming in mind, and gives recommendation s based on performance, affordability, etc.? In the past I've used the cnet editor's reviews, just wondering if there's a better resource available now.

I know I'm not Kayhynn, so please don't think my answer is the only one.  :-D

But Maximum PC answers your question on a very frequent basis, especially for economical gaming rigs, ... or if you're made of money, the ULTIMATE (as of that printing) gaming rig.  They take it from $600 total to several grand.   I've seen high end over $10,000.   But then, it was a SWEET ride they had.   Talk about future-resistant!  lol

Anyway.   Hit up their website at www.maximumpc. com ... it's always worth a gander.

It's a good question, one I might have to answer in one of the next articles....

When I upgrade my stuff, I look through a number of review sites and online shopping stores, especially newegg.  People will review products and give advice on them.

I need to look up a couple of links for ya, but there are some online magazines that review builds as well.

Yeah his is one I've referenced in my freelance computer articles and is pretty reliable.

I guess my biggest advice is once you determine you've got the motherboard that will work for most of the games out right now (or for SWTOR in the future), make sure you get a video card.  Lately, video cards make all the difference combined with adequate memory and a good motherboard.  Sometimes (and some may say this blasphemy) you can do with a slightly lower end motherboard if you get a good video card and max out your ram slots.  What matters most is making sure your motherboard and video card will work well together.  There have been cases where motherboards will short out a good video card because it simply can't handle it, and vice versa.

My current computer is nearing 5 years old. I've upgraded the video card and RAM only and it still works great for all the games out there.

It's been almost a month, slightly more, since the last Ask Kayhynn article, and for that I apologize. It seems like anytime I start a weekly project, karma has something against me and intervenes to prevent me from getting to it. Work, Christmas, New Years and everything else just piled together to take away free time to work on a new article.

And since it has been a while since I had time to play, I'm going to answer more than five questions this week. Check out the article here: http://www.eogamer.com/node/216

If you would like to leave feedback, or leave questions for me to answer, feel free to do so here.
